Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid in a Mad City (2012)

On February 15, 2012 a song titled "Cartoons & Cereal" featuring Gunplay was leaked. Lamar revealed later that the track was for his upcoming album and he was planning to shoot a video for it.

In March 2012, MTV announced that Top Dawg Entertainment, the independent record label Lamar is signed to, have closed a joint venture deal with Interscope Records and Aftermath Entertainment, marking the end of his career as an independent artist. Under the new deal, Kendrick Lamar’s projects, including his upcoming debut studio album Good Kid in a Mad City will be jointly released via Top Dawg, Aftermath and Interscope, while releases from the rest of Black Hippy will be distributed via Top Dawg and Interscope.

Lamar premiered "The Recipe", his debut single and the lead single from Good Kid in a Mad City, at Power 106 on April 2, 2012. The track was released for digital download the following day. The song was produced by Scoop DeVille and features Dr. Dre.

California rapper Murs flipped the script a bit as he switched from artist to interviewer for an interview with fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar at the Paid Dues Festival last month.
While the interview was more of a casual conversation between two artists, with subject matter ranging from Ab-Soul’s hair to Nextel phones, Kendrick did take some time to speak on the complexity of his music when asked about his track “Cartoon & Cereal.”
“I just wanted to do a little twist on just my generation. Talk about something wild, you know. But not throwing it out there and making it something that everybody can just catch on to,” Kendrick explained. “They really gotta sit and dissect it for a second.”
Kendrick also spoke on his interview with Nardwuar which took place during this year’s South By Southwest Festival. The rapper revealed that he was initially caught off guard by Nardwuar’s wealth of facts.
“That was kinda uncomfortable for a second,” said Kendrick. “It was funny though, that dudes crazy. He do some research. I was wondering if he just called a few people up that I knew.”

Kendrick Lamar Discusses "good kid, m.A.A.d city" Album & Relationship With Lady Gaga

Kendrick Lamar explains the extent of his relationship of Lady Gaga, and discusses his upcoming album.

Anticipation is steadily growing for Kendrick Lamar's major label debut, good kid, m.A.A.d city, for which the rapper dropped the first single, "Swimming Pools."

In an interview on WGCI's 107.5's "The Morning Riot," Kendrick explained that his album would not feature many (if any) artists. "I'm selfish on this album," he revealed. "A lot of people get into my situation, they feel that they made it already. They wanna grab all these producers, all these names. I still feel like I gotta prove myself."

Kendrick also made headlines recently when Interscope labelmate Lady Gaga reached out in support of the West Coast emcee.

"That's a good friend," said Kendrick of Gaga, who was in attendance at his performance at recent Pitchfork's Music Festival. "She just reached over on Twitter. Just being a fan of the music. We come from two different worlds, as far as the music we doing."

"She's a fan of Hip Hop," added K. Dot. "She says...my sound is refreshing. That's what really attracted her to it." Kendrick explained that when Gaga reached out, he thought it was a prank. "There be so many fake accounts on Twitter and stuff, so I had to really go through and check. It was her, most definitely."

Kendrick Lamar confirms that Black Hippy will make an appearance on his upcoming LP.

Kendrick Lamar is at work on his major label debut good kid, m.A.A.d city, releasing October 2nd. While he's worked with Gunplay and Dr. Dre on a few pre-album leaks, K. Dot says that guest features will be kept to a minimum on the project, explaining to CBC Music that the LP will be organic and that no collaborations will be forced.

“I’m selfish – it’s all me,” he said. “I’ve got to pick what feels right. I never go into it thinking, ‘I want to get these people on there.’ No, I don’t force nothing and right now it’s turning out to be all me.”

He did confirm that his Black Hippy crew, which also includes ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock, will make appearances on the album. But even as his profile continues to rise - he was recently featured on XXL magazine's cover with Dr. Dre - he doesn't feel the need to call on big name favors.

“People get in this position and feel like they need the big producers, the big artists,” he said. “Nah – I’m still hungry. I want to show and prove to the non-believers.”

Kendrick Lamar Gives Advice To Fans, Talks Why He Doesn't Smoke Weed

Kendrick Lamar gives some pointers to young artists and explains why weed isn't an issue for him.

With his Aftermath debut good kid, m.A.A.d city just weeks away from its October 22 release, Kendrick Lamar is quickly becoming one of the strongest voices in the younger Hip Hop generation. Now, in a recent interview with Mr. Peter Parker, the Compton emcee relates his advice to aspiring listeners.

He said that he wants his younger fans to know that anything is possible with a little bit of effort. He put his own Compton upbringing into perspective, saying that despite the city's socioeconomic woes, he was still blessed with a number of opportunities that many people worldwide do not have.

"[My advice is] anything is possible," he said. "Actually, my little brother just graduated from that same high school [I attended], so he's got his friends that actually [ask me for advice]. Me coming up out of there lets them know that anything is possible; it don't matter where you at. You could be in the slums - people in Africa...don't have schools or food or anything like that, and you're saying you're coming out of a school in Compton, saying you can't make it, that's foolish."

Kendrick also spoke about why he doesn't smoke marijuana. He said that he used to partake when he was younger, but he grew out his habits and made sure to never use drugs as a crutch in his career.

"I used to smoke," he said. "[Smoking weed] wasn't ever a dependen[cy for me]. A lot of people use it as a dependen[cy], they wake up in the morning angry [and smoke]. It never was a dependent for me, so it never was a crutch, really."

Kendrick Lamar Compares "good kid, m.A.A.d city" To "Section.80" Kendrick Lamar weighs in on the similarities between the two projects, and why Black Hippy distinguishes itself from other crews.

They hype for Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d city album has built to a fever pitch. Recently, K. Dot explained how the album compares to his debut, Section.80.

"Um, somewhat. As far as having an original sound, definitely. It don't sound like nothing else," said Kendrick in an interview with Power 98.3's Bootleg Kev. "I always want to keep that originality. Really, I just took pieces from Section.80 that I liked the most. You will have a lot of storytelling, I will say."

Kendrick also explained how his Black Hippy differed from other crews who only developed a single member.

"We look at artists that's at the forefront of the label. You always have the cats behind them, and they always get held in this position of just being behind that major artist. I never wanted that. We never wanted that. We wanted everybody to solidify themselves as they own entity. You have ScHoolboy Q with his core base. You have J. After months of keeping fans waiting, Kendrick Lamar has finally revealed the tracklist for his upcoming major label debut good kid, m.A.A.d city, releasing October 22nd via Top Dawg/Aftermath/Interscope.

For the project, K. Dot enlists Jay Rock, Drake, MC Eiht, Anna Wise and Dr. Dre, the latter of which appears on the closing track "Compton." The tracklist follows the similar pattern of naming tracks off of specific people like opener "Sherane a.k.a. Master Splinter's Daughter," and touts an extended version of lead single "Swimming Pools (Drank)." Oddly, the deluxe edition includes the original version of the track as well.

Shyne explains why he doesn't like Kendrick Lamar's "good kid, m.A.A.d city."

Last night, Shyne took to Twitter to state that he thought Kendrick Lamar has talent but that good kid, m.A.A.d city is "trash." Clarifying his standpoint during an interview with the Cipha Sounds & Rosenberg show, the former Bad Boy rapper explained that he feels K. Dot was fed into the hype machine but that he failed to deliver on his promise.

"I ain't starting no trouble. Listen, y'all live in the United States of America. We don't live in the United States of Aftermath, Jimmy Iovine doesn't pay me, I can say whatever I want," said Shyne. "I'm not talking reckless. I said the young boy got potential and I said he was talented, but the album is trash. That's tough love.

"What I said wasn't not nice, I didn't attack him as an individual, I didn't say anything disrespectful," he continued. "It's trash! I don't really listen to these rappers, but I heard him on a few joints and I was like, shorty's nice. ... So when he was coming out with an album, I was like, I'ma hear more of that."

Po went on to explain that he wasn't feeling the production on the project, and that he'd rather hear a spoken word album if that's the route he wanted to take. "Beats is trash, number one. And once your beats are trash, you're finished because you can't handle a good flow. I don't really want to hear what you gotta say. I'll go buy Dr. Cornel West's album if I want to hear someone talk."

He said that he felt a responsibility to be honest about his opinion because he didn't want Kendrick to drink his own Kool-Aid. "I feel bad for him because everybody's gassing him right now, everyone's on him. He on fire because of that Interscope machine, he's on fire because of that Dr. Dre machine. He's nice, but that's a lot of hype. All I'm saying is, to show y'all I'm not a hater, 50 [Cent] delivered. I never had nothing positive to say about him, but he delivered. He lived up to the hype."

Following former Bad Boy artist Shyne’s unexpected and rather harsh critique this week of Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar’s debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, many were left wondering if the TDE rapper would respond to Shyne’s comments.

The emcee did just that while speaking with HipHopWired.com at this week’s Samsung Galaxy Note II event in Los Angeles, but didn’t have too much to say in regards to Shyne’s bold criticism.

"It's really no response [to him]," Kendrick revealed. "I'm not a sensitive guy, so that's his opinion. Can't stop what the world thinks, so yeah, that's him."

With numerous fans already dishing out the “classic” label for his debut, Kendrick seemed welcoming of the title but instead referred to good kid, m.A.A.d city as being “classic worthy” during his interview.

“It's classic worthy, you know? But it has to stand with the time and have the years behind it,” said the rapper. “Right now it's classic worthy and people [will] look back and say, 'Kendrick's first album really, really, really outdid everything else and became a classic.' I went into it with intentions of making it a classic, so I'm glad everybody's saying that now."

good kid, m.A.A.d city was released on October 22 and is expected to sell over 200,000 copies in its first week.

Kendrick Lamar’s major label debut is a future classic…

Kendrick Lamar is keen to capture his adolescent years’ volatile mind frame by reminiscing, accepting and sharing his inner demons and bitter memories. Even more so than his remarkable independent releases, Overly Dedicated and Section 80, good kid, m.A.A.d city is a true display of his meticulous nature. The quality of precision shows in the music, the lyrics, the concepts, and the structure, making the Compton native’s debut one of the most cohesive bodies of work in recent rap memory.

It starts with a recording of a prayer, and fades in on a 17-year-old Kendrick, whose focus in life is pillaging of “pussy.” Fluidly dashing and pausing over a nocturnal backdrop, K-Dot’s lustful mind frame only awakes with the encounter of two gang bangers. Just like that, the anecdotal intro, “Sherane a.k.a. Master Splinter’s Daughter,” which creates the mise en scène for the album, cuts into the first of many voicemail recordings (essentially interludes) from Kendrick’s mother and father. Not only do these voicemails adjoin the plotline, but they also aid as reminders for young Lamar to stray from the street life, serving as yin to the violence-driven yang of Compton.

It’s crucial to note throughout the majority of good kid, m.A.A.d city, Kendrick Lamar plays himself as a 17-year-old teenager, who’s driving around Los Angeles in his mother’s caravan with his gang-affiliated homies. This narrative is the mainstay throughout the project. It accentuates a sense of excitement, shedding light on a side of the talented wordsmith that hasn’t been dissected until now. Starting with “Backseat Freestyle,” with its bigmouth, punch-line antics over a thumping Hit-Boy production, this is a pre-fame MC who’s foolishly blazing off raps with friends. It doesn’t, however, means the flow is elementary or his quotable are shabby; he channels multiple voices and executes crisp-clean double- and triple-time bonanza with ease.

But fun and games aren’t the only elements that constitute a young Kendrick’s late-night escapade. On “The Art of Peer Pressure”—a spacious, internal monologue—he highlights the rowdy behaviors he displays in front of his friends, while having an almost opposite sentiment inside his psyche. This thought further explores on a more in-depth lane on “good kid,” in which the first-two verses discuss the allure and fear administered by—quite ironically—gangs and police sirens that both flaunt colors red and blue.

The album reaches a creative and cinematic climax on “m.A.A.d city.” Whether it was meant to depict his puberty or the panting sufferings of reality, K.L. purposely tweaks his voice into a higher pitch, and frantically describes the “mad” elements of Compton. Gun-driven, gang violence widespread throughout the ‘hood has become a part of Kendrick’s DNA. It’s a tempting draw, even when he attempts to fight it. And toward the end of this epic, the rapper epitomizes his lineage claiming that he’s an “angel,” who was made on “angel dust.”

After the violence subsides, Kendrick leads the “short film” near its epilogue on “Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst.” The first-two verses speak from the perspectives of siblings as subjects that Kendrick touches on current and previous albums. It’s a tearjerker, and an impressive delivery of emotions that can’t help but let the listeners visualize empathetic portraits of those gunned down and faded away.

While Kendrick rolls deep, affiliated with TDE and Aftermath, there’s not a bevy of features. All of the guest appearances on the project assist as cameos with fitting roles. Drake on the suave, love serenade “Poetic Justice,” Jay Rock on the tale of hustler’s ambitions in “Money Trees,” MC Eiht serving OG knowledge on “m.A.A.d city,” and Dr. Dre passing the torch to Kendrick on “Compton” all serve a thematic purpose. None of their names or verses outshines the star of the movie. They’re all knitted into the drape known as good kid, m.A.A.d city, helping to mold a fuller image.

Overall, good kid, m.A.A.d city is an invigorating LP. Every record is both complexly arranged and sonically fitting, foregrounding Kendrick’s vivid lyricism and amazing control of cadence. There’s not a single loophole. From the prayers on “Sherane a.k.a. Master Splinter’s Daughter” to the triumphant ending on “Compton,” each skit and track interweaves one another, solidifying a complete picture. While only time can determine the album’s fate, this life chronicle of Kendrick has all—if not more—of the qualities rap’s now living and deceased legends have carved in stone. It’s an undeniably stellar major label debut from Kendrick Lamar, which will certainly hurt the self-esteem of many rappers out now while also inspiring them to reach these heights. —Jaeki Cho (@JaekiCho)

În data de 22 octombrie 2012 a lansat primul său album oficial sub o casă de discuri importantă. Albumul good kid, m.A.A.d city urcă direct pe locul 2 în topul Billboard 200 US cu 242 000 de unități vândute în prima săptămână.
